Madame Butterfly
Opera Orlando presents Puccini’s Madame Butterfly, one of opera’s most beloved and emotionally devastating masterpieces. Set in Nagasaki, Japan, the opera follows Cio-Cio San, a young woman who marries American naval officer Lt. Pinkerton and waits faithfully for his return long after he leaves for the United States. Puccini’s soaring score and deeply human storytelling continue to make the work one of the most moving experiences in opera.
Soprano Yeawon Jun makes her Company debut in the title role alongside tenor Isaac Hurtado as Pinkerton. Kalena Bovell — the first Black woman to conduct an opera in Canada and recipient of the 2024 Sphinx Medal of Excellence — conducts the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra in a new production directed by Rebecca A. Herman.
